Toy materials

Materials in the toy industry constantly evolve and as a result can become confusing. Here is a quick run down of what are the differences and how to look after them.

Latex

Most popular material for sex toys. More traditional versions include more rigid latex. More modern ones come in jelly form, in multiple colours, often sparkling and sometimes scented. The newest technological development includes super stretch jelly, often used on penis rings and advanced vibrators. Latex cannot be used with oil-based substances, or it will disintegrate. There is a small percentage of population that can be allergic to latex.

Plastic and acrylic

Rigid plastic and acrylic have been used in toy industry right from the start, and are still very popular materials. Hypoallergenic and easy to clean, they can be used with any lubricants, cleaned with soapy water and will not disintegrate or age. Plastic vibrators tend to resonate a lot more and therefore produce stronger vibrations.

Silicone

One of the most versatile materials to hit the toy industry in recent years. Silicone is hypoallergenic, doesn’t smell, can be thoroughly cleaned (even boiled in water) and comes in fantastic vibrant colours. Soft and supple, it is very pleasant to feel and easy to look after. Do not use silicone-based lubricants with silicone toys, as it damages them permanently.

Realskin

The most advanced toy material imitates the feel of human skin. It is a mixture of latex and silicone, with a soft and porous surface.
Often comes with talcum powder, which helps preserve it. Worldwide manufacturers trademark their own realskin formulas under different names, amongst which the most famous are LovecloneTM, CyberskinTM and Nature Skin. Realskin is very sensitive to lubricants.
JO Agape lubricant is Real skin safe.

Glass

Glass is a fascinating material to work with and glass toys are often works of art, individually hand crafted to amaze visually as well as sensually. Make sure the glass toys you buy are made of borosilicate glass, which is resistant to slight shock and heat changes.
Make sure toys do not have sharp edges and are not dropped. Glass toys can be used with any lubricant.
